As Sea of Thieves utilises Xbox Live functionality within Steam, the process for sending and receiving game session invites between Steam users is different from what is normally expected.

But fear not, detailed below are the ways in which you can send and receive invites between users on the Steam platform.

Ensure the correct accounts are signed in

  • Please check that the account which you wish to play Sea of Thieves on is logged in to the Microsoft Store and Xbox Console Companion app. If you do not have the correct profiles signed in then invites may not work.
  • Launch Sea of Thieves through Steam.
  • If you have not done so already, when prompted during the boot process, sign in your gamer profile which is signed into the Microsoft Store and Console Companion app. Also link this account to Steam when prompted.

Sending Invites from a game lobby

  • At the main menu, select the desired game mode and proceed to the lobby.
  • Once in the game lobby, you will notice the option in the bottom left corner of the screen to Invite Friends. Either click that option or press 1 on the keyboard.
  • This will now display your friends list and you can now invite friends as normal.
  • Alternatively you can also send invites through the Windows Game Bar while in the lobby. To do this, in the lobbyeither press Win+G or the Guide button on a controller to view the Game Bar. Then once viewing the Game Bar overlay, from the 'Xbox Social' section right click the desired profile and select 'Invite to Game' from the drop down list.
  • On a sidenote: You can add friends to your friends list either through the Windows Game bar or Xbox Console Companion App.

Sending invites when in-game

  • Once in gameplay, press the Esc key to enter the pause menu.
  • Viewing the list of options, select My Crew.
  • Notice the option in the bottom left corner of the screen to Invite Friends. Either click that option or press 1 on the keyboard.
  • This will now display your friends list and you can invite friends as normal.
  • Alternatively you can also send invites through the Windows Game Bar while in-game. As above, when viewing the Game Bar overlay in-game right click the desired profile from the 'Xbox Social' section and select 'Invite to Game' from the drop down list.

Sending Invites to Another Steam friend via Steam Overlay

A Steam user can open up their friends list and send an invite by right clicking the friend they wish to invite and then selecting "Invite to Game". This will then send the recipient a chat message containing the invite. The recipient will simply need to click accept and will automatically load into the lobby.

This can be done whilst on the "Set Sail" screen, or whilst already in game, so long as enough slots remain in your crew.

Accepting Invites

There are few different methods in which you can accept invites for joining users on other platforms as well.

  • When in-game, any invites received will be displayed in a pop up message within Sea of Thieves. Accepting this message will then forward you to the game as normal. This invite will also be present within your Xbox Game Bar.
  • Outside of the game the invite will be available within your Xbox Game Bar.

Joining through the Friends list without an Invite

The Windows Game Bar will also allow you to join another users game session regardless of whether the other player is in a lobby or in-game as long as your profiles are Friends. This can also be performed in or outside of the game.

  • Open the Windows Game Bar. Then from the 'Xbox Social' section, right click the desired profile and select 'Join Game' from the drop down list.
  • If performed outside of the game, Sea of Thieves will now boot.
  • A message will be displayed about joining the other users game. Simply selecting 'Yes' to confirm will then forward you to that session.

Please Note: Joining others through the Friends List in the Xbox Companion App for Steam profiles

  • This will result in the 'Purchase again?' screen being shown for the Microsoft Store on the Xbox Console Companion App. This is due to the process being associated with the Windows 10 Store version rather than the Steam platform version at this time.

Do I have to be running Windows to play?

Yes. For this game to work, users must be running the Windows operating system.

Is the Steam version included in cross play?

\n

Yes! Players will be able to crew up and play together regardless of which platform they’re on, so those already playing on Xbox and Windows will be able to play with friends on Steam.

Will game progress carry over to Steam?

\n

Yes! Your ranks, cosmetics and currency will all be there after you sign into your Xbox Live account, meaning you’ll be able to pick up exactly where you left off. Previously earned achievements will automatically unlock on Steam too.

Will this game be locked to 30 frames per second?

\n

No. FPS will be uncapped.

\n

Do I get the game for free on Steam if I already own it?

\n

No. Players on Xbox and Windows will not receive an entitlement to a free Steam copy. However, cross play breaks down barriers by enabling new Steam players to crew up easily with existing players on Xbox and Windows.

Where do I activate in-game cosmetic/item codes?

\n

To enter a code for an in-game cosmetic or other reward, go tohttps://redeem.microsoft.com, log in with your Microsoft account and type in the 25-digit code as instructed. Note that it’ll be unlocked on this account only, so make sure this is the same account you use to sign in toSea of Thieves!

Will Sea of Thieves be available in my country/region?

This game will be purchasable in all countries where the Steam store is available, and the list of supported languages is being expanded for the Steam release. However, if your language is not supported, the game will default to English.

To then apply these purchases to your profile you simply need to boot Sea of Thieves where they will be 'consumed'. After this, all contents will be made available in-game and also the purchase will then be removed from your inventory.

This is due to already having purchased a Store Bundle that is already within your inventory (which has not yet been 'consumed') and is designed to prevent multiple purchases of the same Store Bundles at the same time.

When your graphics drivers are either not up to date or suffering from some form of corruption, this can also cause the crash while booting. We recommend that when trying this step that you completely remove you old drivers before updating to the latest versions. To remove your old drivers and then update to the latest:

- Find Entries labelled Xbl_Ticket

If you received an error message from Sea of Thieves that states “There is a missing or corrupt data file that is required for the game to run.” then this page may be able to help you resolve this.

There are a wide variety of reasons why the game install might get corrupted, or that the data loaded by the game might be corrupted.

\n

Removing the corrupted file

\n

Please try removing the corrupted file, if the file name in the error is always the same when you try to launch:

\n
    \n
  1. Boot the game and take note of corrupt file from your screenshot (For example: Core_9ef849ee)
  2. \n
  3. Right click Sea of Thieves from your Games list in Steam.\n
  4. \n
  5. From the context menu select 'Properties'.\n
  6. \n
  7. From the 'Local Files' tab click 'Browse Local Files'.\n
  8. \n
  9. Once viewing the game files for Sea of Thieves navigate to Athena > Content > Paks.\n
  10. \n
  11. Using the search bar in the top right hand corner, search for the file which is corrupted (Core_9ef849ee) and then delete that file.
  12. \n
  13. Return to your properties window for Sea of Thieves, then again from the Local Files section select 'Verify Integrity of Local Game Files...'
  14. \n
  15. Once complete, restart and test the game.

Anti-Virus Issues
You could try whitelisting the game with your anti-virus product. There are known compatibility issues with some antivirus products that we are working with the anti-virus vendors to resolve. If you experience an issue with a specific product, please let us know.

\n

Article: Trend Micro internet security conflict

\n

To whitelist Sea of Thieves, navigate to the game’s installation folder from within the whitelist page of your antivirus product. To get the installation folder, press Win+R on your keyboard and type Powershell and press Enter. Then enter this command:

\n

Get-AppxPackage *SeaOfThieves*

\n

Or if you are having issues with the Pioneer version of the game:

\n

Get-AppxPackage *Wasserburg*

\n

It should print out several lines. You can copy the Installation Location value from the start of C:\\ to the end of the line by highlighting it with your mouse and then right-clicking in the window to copy it. You can then paste this into the Open Dialog by pressing in the text field at the bottom and pressing Ctrl+V then pressing Enter. From here you should navigate by double-clicking the folders for Binaries then UWP64, then finally selecting SotGame.exe, which is the executable you need to whitelist.

\n

Note: This process will need to be done each time the game is updated should your antivirus conflict with our game.

\n\n

Store install issues
We are aware that in some extremely rare cases the Microsoft Store may itself corrupt a game install. We are working with the various teams within Microsoft to resolve these issues. If you experience this, please raise a support ticket by clicking on the \"Raise a Support Request\" button at the bottom of this page.

\n\n

Unstable Overclock
We have confirmed that certain users may experience game crashes if they are overclocking their machines. This may have been automatic by your motherboard manufacturer or done manually by yourself. If you experience issues, we recommend you restore your CPU and memory to stock settings and perform a full reinstall of the game. Corruption can occur during the installation, as well as when the game is running.

\n

If you manually overclocked your machine, as well as checking the usual settings, you could try increasing your “AVX Instruction Negative Offset” or the equivalent for your motherboard. As with all overclocking, you modify these settings at your own risk. If you are not sure what this is, this is not relevant to you.

\n\n

Old version of Windows
You may be hitting a bug or issue with an older version of Windows. We recommend ensuring you are up to date in Windows update.

\n\n

Buggy or faulty drivers
You may experience issues with game installs if you have drivers that are causing corruption. These issues may be difficult to detect, so we advise ensuring you have the latest drivers. If the problem only recently started, you could try rolling back to an earlier version of the driver.

\n\n

Incompatible software
Some third-party software attempts to inject itself into every process on your machine and has been known to cause crashes.

\n

If you have recently started experiencing the issue, we recommend uninstalling any recently installed software.

\n\n

Faulty hardware
This is always the worst-case scenario, but the most likely candidates for faulty hardware are hard drives or SSDs that are nearing the end of their life.

5. Open the Trend Micro main console by right-clicking on the Trend Micro icon in your taskbar and selecting Open the Main Console

8. Click the + Add button and then Browse

\n

9. Paste the results fromStep 4into the File name box

\n

10. Click the Open button, this will add the path your Exception List

\n

11. Click Apply then OK to save your changes & close the Exception Lists window

If you're having trouble downloading Sea of Thieves from the Windows Store, there are a few things you can try:

Reset the Microsoft Store

You can use the steps below to refresh the Store which will clear the cache and refresh your library and permissions. This fixes the majority of cases.

  1. Close the Microsoft Store app if you have it open.

  3. Click Start and type \"wsreset\", without quotes.
